CANEN GARCÍA (Colombia, 1975). “Fruit Seller,” 2011. Acrylic on canvas. Signed in the lower left corner. Certificate of authenticity included. Measurements: 50 x 70 cm. Everyday life and Latin American folk traditions are among Canen García’s primary sources of inspiration. In this work, the artist depicts a street fruit stand, featuring a vendor surrounded by mangoes, pineapples, cocos, and containers of cut fruit. The composition stands out for its intense color palette, geometric shapes, and bold dark outlines, which evoke the aesthetic of stained-glass windows. The overlapping of elements and the hallmarks of warm and cool tones lend dynamism to a scene rooted in cultural identity and folk traditions. Canen García initially trained in architecture, graduating in 1998, and furthered his artistic studies in Colombia and Spain. Based in Barcelona since 2001, he has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions, both in Spain and Colombia, and has been a member of various artistic collectives. Among his accolades are the awards he received at the Contestarte competition in Bogotá in 2009 and 2010.
