ENRIQUE LEMAGNE CÁRDENAS, “Lemagne’83” (Cuba, 1983). “Presence.” Mixed media and acrylic on canvas. Certificate of authenticity included. Measurements: 120 x 100 cm. In this work, Lemagne’83 explores the relationship between gestural abstraction and symbolic figuration through a composition of great expressive intensity. An enigmatic black silhouette, outlined by a vibrant blue contour, dominates the pictorial space, evoking a face in profile or an ancestral-style mask. Surrounding it, spontaneous brushstrokes and layers of green, yellow, red, and orange colors create a background of great textural richness. The contrast between the definition of the figure and the dynamism of its surroundings creates a visual tension that reinforces the image’s mysterious character, reminiscent of surrealism and artistic expressions with primitive roots. Lemagne’83’s work moves between the surreal and the poetic, exploring the symbolic and metaphysical dimensions of the 20th-century avant-garde. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Sociocultural Studies from the University of Camagüey, Cuba (2012), and furthered his education with studies in photography in 2013. His work combines abstraction, symbolic figuration, and diverse cultural references. Notable among his recent exhibitions are his participation at the Thomson Gallery in Zug, Switzerland (2025); the BIARCO Contemporary Art Biennial in Armenia, Colombia (2024); and “Plural” at the Vearte Gallery in Alicante (2024).
