EDUARDO FONSECA (Ponte Nova, Minas Gerais, 1984) for Vista Alegre. “The Tiger and the Stars,” 2022. Porcelain calendar plate decorated with platinum accents. Vista Alegre Ref. 21137579. Vista Alegre mark, title, and the artist’s printed signature on the reverse. Measurements: 33.5 cm in diameter. Conceived as a Vista Alegre calendar plate for 2022, “O Tigre e as Estrelas” draws inspiration from the intersection of two zodiacal systems. Eduardo Fonseca chose the Year of the Tiger from the Chinese zodiac as the central motif, depicting the animal moving across a sky populated by the constellations of the Western zodiac, while the twelve months are arranged around the rim. The artist himself explained the project as a combination of both horoscopes, presenting the tiger as a figure traversing this astral universe. The composition translates Fonseca’s interest in animal figures—a recurring theme in his work—onto porcelain through striking hallmarks between the golden tiger and the nocturnal background. Vista Alegre also incorporated platinum elements and produced the piece as part of its annual series of calendar plates; the 2022 model is officially cataloged under reference number 21137579. Eduardo Fonseca graduated with a degree in Painting from the School of Fine Arts at the Federal University of Minas Gerais in 2009 and earned a master’s degree in Painting from the University of Lisbon in 2013. His career includes projects and residencies at 59Rivoli in Paris and the Nongyuan International Art Village in Chengdu, as well as interventions linked to the Museu de Arte da Pampulha. His collaboration with Vista Alegre also includes a Christmas plate created in 2020.
