Adriaen Hanneman (Den Haag 1603 - 1671 Den Haag) Bubble blowing girl oil/canvas 73 x 58 cm SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE € 20000 - 40000 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE € 20000 Hanneman came from a wealthy Catholic family in The Hague and became a pupil of the portrait painter Anthonie van Ravesteyn the Younger in 1619. After producing early works in the tradition of The Hague’s portraiture, he traveled to London around 1626, remaining active there until approximately 1638. He likely worked for a time within the circle or workshop of Anthony van Dyck, whose courtly style profoundly influenced his entire subsequent body of work. Upon returning to The Hague, Hanneman established himself as a sought-after portraitist. During and after the English Civil War, he painted numerous Royalist émigrés, including the future King Charles II, Henry, Duke of Gloucester, and the statesman Edward Hyde. At the same time, he received commissions from the Dutch court, such as portraits of William II of Orange and Mary Stuart, Princess of Orange. Hanneman combined the precise Dutch portrait tradition with Van Dyck’s elegant, dynamic approach to posture, the rendering of fabrics, and the depiction of social status. His subjects generally appear in sumptuous attire, displaying their insignia and striking commanding poses; yet his painting retains a restrained, observant quality. Beyond his artistic endeavors, Hanneman played a significant institutional role: he became Dean of The Hague’s Guild of Saint Luke in 1645 and was instrumental in founding the artists' association Confrerie Pictura in 1656, serving as its first dean.
