Edwin Levick (1869 - 1929 New York) From the series Chin Breeders of America Inc., around 1925 vintage gelatin silver print 25 x 20 cm photographer's blind-stamped mounted SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE € 500 - 800 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE € 500 Edvin Levick (1868–1929) was a British-American photographer best known for his work in press, travel, and maritime photography. His assignments took him to locations such as Egypt, the Far East, and various port and coastal regions, making ships, harbors, landscapes, and coastal life recurring subjects in his work. In the United States, Levick worked for major newspapers like the *Chicago Tribune* and the *New York Herald*, placing his images within the context of the burgeoning illustrated press and modern photojournalism. Another significant aspect of his work comprises photographs of Jewish migrants and immigrants, documenting the social change and mobility of the era. Levick’s work bridges the traditions of maritime and travel photography with early American press and documentary photography. Morris Rosenfeld—renowned for his images of New York Harbor and its shipping—serves as a key historical reference point for Levick’s maritime subjects. Terms such as Egypt, the Far East, Jewish migration, immigrant photography, harbor photography, maritime photography, travel photography, press photography, and New York also define central themes within Levick’s photographic oeuvre. His work thus sits at the intersection of visual reporting, travel documentation, and the photographic observation of migration and global mobility.
