Monika von Boch* (Mettlach 1915 - 1993 Mettlach) Trees vintage gelatin silver print 16,5 x 18,2 cm verso photographer's stamp SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE € 600 - 1200 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE € 600 Monika von Boch (1915–1993) was a German photographer whose work represents a significant contribution to post-war German photography and the movement known as Subjektive Fotografie (Subjective Photography). After initially teaching herself photography, she developed an increasingly experimental visual language from the 1950s onwards, in which light, shadow, movement, reflections, framing, and geometric shapes became independent compositional elements. Rather than seeking a purely documentary depiction, she was interested in the photographic transformation of reality; architecture, landscapes, everyday objects, and human figures often appear fragmented, abstracted, or dissolved into rhythmic structures. Her work thus bridges experimental photography and a concept of plane, line, and form influenced by Concrete Art. Monika von Boch’s photographic approach is closely linked to the circle of Otto Steinert, Peter Keetman, Toni Schneiders, and Kilian Breier—as well as the Steinert-led group fotoform—which established a new, subjective, and formally experimental style of photography in Germany during the 1950s. While Albert Renger-Patzsch’s Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity) photography served as a crucial precursor regarding the precise perception of form and structure, Subjektive Fotografie increasingly shifted the focus toward abstraction, photographic experimentation, and individual perception. Von Boch thus occupies a position between objective formal analysis, Concrete Art, and experimental photography, developing a distinctive visual language in which the camera serves less as a documentary tool and more as an instrument of creative composition.
