Eva Essenthier* (Vienna 1935 - 2012 New York City) Andy Warhol with accompaniment in Central Park, New York City, 1980s, unique vintage gelatin silver print 35,1 x 27,6 cm SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE € 900 - 1600 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE € 900 Eva Essenthier (Vienna, 1935 – New York, 2012) was an Austrian photographer best known for the images she created in New York. Her work spans documentary photography, social reportage, portraiture, and the observation of urban pop culture. She devoted herself particularly to life in Harlem and African American New York; her surviving body of work includes photo essays on dancers and singers, portraits of Angela Davis and Denise Oliver-Velez, and images capturing breakdancing and New York at night. Her photographs combine an immediate, observational visual style with a keen interest in people, social milieus, and the cultural shifts within the American metropolis. Essenthier’s New York photography sits within the broader tradition of American social and documentary photography, aligning with the approaches of figures such as Helen Levitt and Martha Cooper. While Levitt had been capturing everyday street life and New York’s visual culture since the 1930s, Cooper later focused on documenting urban youth and pop culture, street art, and hip-hop. Essenthier’s work from Harlem and other New York neighborhoods fits into this wider context of street, reportage, and social photography, while her specific interest in African American culture, political figures, and urban pop culture establishes a distinct focus of its own. Her work thus represents a photographic engagement with New York as a cultural and social focal point during the second half of the 20th century. PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights and platform fee.
