Nancy Spero* (Cleveland 1926 - 2009 New York) Dancers and goddesses, 2001 color lithography/paper 61,5 x 49,5 cm signed Spero, dated 2001 inscriebed Vd, numbered 1/55 SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE € 300 - 500 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE € 300 Nancy Spero (1926–2009) is considered one of the most significant figures in feminist art and politically engaged American postwar art. Her work evolved from the figurative painting of the 1950s—through the *War Series*, which protested the Vietnam War—to a distinctive visual language combining hand-printing, collage, drawing, and text on paper. In her works, which often take the form of friezes or scrolls, female figures, mythological archetypes, and historical depictions are repeated serially and interwoven with text fragments. Her engagement with themes of war, violence, oppression, and female self-determination links Spero particularly to Käthe Kollwitz, while her intense exploration of the body, sexuality, and female identity reveals an art-historical affinity with Louise Bourgeois. Furthermore, her combination of text, political message, and visual repetition places her alongside artists like Barbara Kruger and Jenny Holzer, while her focus on women's history and the body establishes her as a key figure in the realms of feminist art, political art, collage, and printmaking. PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights and platform fee. In the case of normal taxation (marked ° at the estimate), a premium of 24% is added to the highest bid. The mandatory sales tax is added to the sum of the highest bid, the buyer's premium and platform fee. This amounts to 13% for paintings, drawings, graphic works and sculptures and 20% for photographs and all other items. The buyer's premium amounts to 28% in case of differential taxation. The sales tax is included in the differential taxation.
