Willem de Kooning* (Rotterdam 1904 - 1997 East Hampton) Springs Artists Exhibition at Ashawagh Hall, 1979 offset lithography/paper 60,5 x 50,5 cm signed de Kooning, numbered 1/84/100 signed im Druck de Kooning SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE € 300 - 500 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE € 300 Willem de Kooning was a Dutch-American painter and a central figure of Abstract Expressionism. His powerful, visceral painting style blends figuration, abstraction, and landscape, and played a decisive role in shaping the New York School. De Kooning was born on April 24, 1904, in Rotterdam, where he trained in commercial and decorative art. In 1926, he arrived in the United States as a stowaway and settled in New York. After working as a house painter, illustrator, and window dresser, he worked for the Works Progress Administration’s government art program during the 1930s and joined the New York avant-garde. From the 1940s onwards, he developed a visual language characterized by vigorous brushwork, overpainting, and a dense, material quality of paint. His first solo exhibition in 1948 established his standing as a leading exponent of Action Painting. He achieved international renown with his Women series (1950–1953), particularly with Woman I. These large-scale images of women—oscillating between seduction, aggression, and the grotesque—combine the figure with a vehement, gestural dissolution of form. In 1963, de Kooning moved to Springs, near East Hampton on Long Island. There, he created increasingly abstract landscapes, followed later by bright, intensely colored paintings featuring ribbon-like forms. Willem de Kooning died on March 19, 1997, in East Hampton.
