Ellsworth Kelly* (Newburgh 1923 - 2015 Spencertown) Red X lithography/paper 38 x 27,5 cm SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE € 300 - 500 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE € 300 Ellsworth Kelly was an American painter, sculptor, and printmaker. With his sharply defined areas of color, pared-down forms, and shaped canvases, he ranks among the key pioneers of Hard-edge painting, Color Field painting, and Minimalism. Following art training in New York and Boston and military service during World War II, Kelly lived in France from 1948 to 1954. In Paris, he developed his distinctive visual language based on observations of architecture, nature, light, and shadow. Influences from Jean Arp, Constantin Brancusi, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, and Piet Mondrian—as well as Romanesque architecture—played a crucial role in this process. Kelly distilled these visual impressions into autonomous lines, color planes, and shapes. In early works such as *Colors for a Large Wall* and *Spectrum Colors Arranged by Chance* (both 1951), he experimented with chance procedures, collage, and modular color arrangements. In doing so, he consciously distanced himself from the subjective, gestural painting of Abstract Expressionism. After returning to the United States in 1954, he continued this approach in New York. In addition to paintings, he created large-scale sculptures in steel, aluminum, and wood, featuring minimalist geometric forms that interact with the surrounding space. Spanning more than seven decades, his body of work encompasses painting, drawing, collage, printmaking, photography, sculpture, and architecture. PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights and platform fee. The sales tax is included in the differential taxation.
