Sean Scully* (born 1945 in Dublin) Winterlight, 2009 color aquatint/paper 20 x 15 cm signed Sean Scully, dated 09 numbered 12/40 SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE € 1600 - 2600 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE € 1600 Sean Scully is an Irish-American painter, printmaker, sculptor, and photographer. A significant figure in abstract painting since the 1970s, he evolved a visual language from Minimalism that is emotionally charged and defined by light, color, and architecture. Following his training in London—at Croydon College of Art and Newcastle University—a fellowship took him to Harvard University in 1972–73. Scully moved to New York in 1975. Engaging with Minimal Art, Hard-Edge painting, and geometric abstraction, he developed a style featuring horizontal and vertical bands of color and rectangular fields. Piet Mondrian and Kazimir Malevich serve as reference points for his organization of surface and geometry, while Donald Judd, Sol LeWitt, and Richard Serra provide context regarding the minimalist concerns of seriality, material, and space. However, Scully distinguished his work through the visible hand of the painter, the material presence of the paint, and the tension between order and rupture. Henri Matisse, Mark Rothko, and Barnett Newman are key points of comparison for the expressive, spatial, and psychological impact of his color. Agnes Martin, Ad Reinhardt, Ellsworth Kelly, Robert Ryman, and Brice Marden provide connections to themes of reduction, grids, color fields, and hand-painted textures. In his Wall of Light and Landline series, planes of color evoke walls, windows, horizons, or zones of light. J. M. W. Turner, Vincent van Gogh, and Giorgio Morandi offer points of reference regarding light, atmosphere, and color modulation; Howard Hodgkin, Pablo Picasso, and Jackson Pollock relate to memory, construction, and the physical act of painting. Scully has also produced drawings, prints, photographs, and sculptures. He has taught at Princeton University, the Parsons School of Design, and the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights and platform fee. In the case of normal taxation (marked ° at the estimate), a premium of 24% is added to the highest bid. The mandatory sales tax is added to the sum of the highest bid, the buyer's premium and platform fee. This amounts to 13% for paintings, drawings, graphic works and sculptures and 20% for photographs and all other items. The buyer's premium amounts to 28% in case of differential taxation. The sales tax is included in the differential taxation.
