Frank Stella* (Malden 1936 - 2024 New York City) Work sets you free, 1967 (Black Series I) lithography/paper 23 x 44,5 cm signed F. Stella, dated 67 numbered 53/100 SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE € 1400 - 2400 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE € 1400 Frank Stella (1936–2024) is one of the defining figures of American postwar art and is considered a pioneer of Hard-Edge painting, Minimal Art, and geometric abstraction. With his famous Black Paintings (1958–60), he developed a radically reduced, systematic visual language as a counter-position to the Abstract Expressionism of Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko, and Barnett Newman. Working alongside artists such as Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, Ad Reinhardt, Ellsworth Kelly, Agnes Martin, Robert Ryman, and Kenneth Noland, Stella explored surface, line, color, seriality, and the material nature of the picture support. His shaped canvases became a crucial starting point for Minimal Art and are situated in the context of Donald Judd, Sol LeWitt, Dan Flavin, Carl Andre, and Robert Morris. Through the Protractor Paintings, the Polish Village Paintings, and his later reliefs and sculptures, Stella expanded geometric painting into the realms of space, object, and architecture. His work bridges geometric abstraction, Hard-Edge, Op Art, Concrete Art, and Post-Minimalism, establishing connections to artists such as Josef Albers, Max Bill, Piet Mondrian, Kazimir Malevich, Victor Vasarely, Bridget Riley, François Morellet, Jesús Rafael Soto, Carlos Cruz-Diez, Julio Le Parc, John Chamberlain, and Richard Serra. Stella thus stands as a pivotal link between the European avant-garde, American postwar art, Minimal Art, and contemporary abstract sculpture. PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights and platform fee. The sales tax is included in the differential taxation.
