Marc Chagall* (Peskowatik bei Witebsk 1887 - 1985 Saint-Paul-de-Vence) Paradise color lithography, handcolored/paper 35 x 26 cm published in Dessins pour la Bible SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE € 150 - 300 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE € 150 Marc Chagall, the 20th-century Russian-French painter, was born in 1887 in Vitebsk (now Belarus) into a Jewish family. He studied in St. Petersburg from 1907 to 1910 under Yukhanon Yavlensky and in Paris in 1911 under Aristide Maillol. He was active in the Montparnasse school, where he became acquainted with Robert Delaunay, Pablo Picasso, Amedeo Modigliani, and the Cubists and Fauvists. After the revolution and civil war in Russia (1917–1922), during which he led art education in Vitebsk with El Lissitzky and Kazimir Malevich, he returned to France in 1923, married Bella Rosenfeld, and created dreamlike scenes of Jewish life, circus motifs, and biblical illustrations. Chagall developed a poetic surrealism with flying figures, vibrant colors, and symbolism from his Vitebsk childhood, encouraged by Guillaume Apollinaire and Vassily Kandinsky. From 1941 onward, in exile in New York, he designed stained glass windows (Hadassah Synagogue, Jerusalem, 1961; UN, 1964), stage sets for Stravinsky operas, and mosaics—a body of work of Jewish art that unites Fauvism, Cubism, and dream worlds.
