Robert Hammerstiel* (Vršac 1933 - 2020 Neunkirchen) Flowering lilac oil/canvas 100 x 69,5 cm monogrammed RH SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE € 1400 - 2800 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE € 1400 Robert Hammerstiel was an Austrian painter and graphic artist of Banat Swabian descent whose work was shaped both by his experiences of internment camps and flight and by a later visual language characterized by stark formal reduction. Largely self-taught—having initially pursued art alongside his work as a baker and a laborer at the Ternitz steelworks—he developed a distinctive graphic style, centered on the woodcut medium, through workshops with Gerda Matejka-Felden, Robert Schmitt, and Gerhard Swoboda. From the 1970s onwards, drawing on biblical themes and scenes from memory, Hammerstiel created a visual world of stencil-like figures and clearly structured spaces, rendered in woodcuts and color etchings. A trip to New York in 1988 ushered in a new phase in his work; he turned to Pop Art, rediscovered color, and radically simplified forms, resulting in a bold, narrative visual style. His work has been exhibited at major institutions such as the Leopold Museum and the Albertina in Vienna; in 2007, he wrapped the Vienna Ringturm in a monumental work depicting the stages of his life and received honors such as the Grand Gold Medal of Honor from the Künstlerhaus. PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights and platform fee. In the case of normal taxation (marked ° at the estimate), a premium of 24% is added to the highest bid. The mandatory sales tax is added to the sum of the highest bid, the buyer's premium and platform fee. This amounts to 13% for paintings, drawings, graphic works and sculptures and 20% for photographs and all other items. The buyer's premium amounts to 28% in case of differential taxation. The sales tax is included in the differential taxation.
