Maurice Estève* (Culan 1904 - 2001 Culan) Matinailles, 1956 color lithography/paper 44,2 x 55,5 cm signed Esteve, numbered 85/200 SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE € 200 - 400 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE € 200 Maurice Estève was a French painter and graphic artist, as well as a significant figure in the *Nouvelle École de Paris* (New School of Paris). His work evolved from a representational style influenced by Cézanne, Cubism, and Surrealism into a distinctive, color-rich form of lyrical abstraction. Estève grew up in modest circumstances, spent his childhood in Culan, and moved to Paris in 1918. There, he attended drawing classes and independent studios in Montparnasse; simultaneously, studying Old Masters at the Louvre formed a crucial part of his largely self-taught artistic education. During the 1920s, he worked for a time as a textile pattern designer in Barcelona. Estève began exhibiting in Paris in the late 1920s. From the 1940s onwards, he developed his characteristic compositions featuring interlocking, organic-looking forms and harmoniously balanced, luminous colors. For him, color and form were inseparable; he rejected the label "abstract" for his painting. Along with Jean Bazaine, Alfred Manessier, and Gustave Singier, he is considered a leading representative of lyrical abstraction in post-war France.
