As the founder of *Pittura metafisica* (Metaphysical Art), he created an enigmatic visual world—featuring deserted squares, arcades, long shadows, ancient statues, and incongruously combined objects—that paved the way for Surrealism. Giuseppe Maria Alberto Giorgio de Chirico was born on July 10, 1888, in Volos to Italian parents. Following his father's death, the family moved to Munich in 1906. At the academy there, he engaged with the work of Arnold Böcklin and Max Klinger, as well as the writings of Friedrich Nietzsche and Arthur Schopenhauer. Ancient mythology, melancholy, and a sense of modern alienation thus became fundamental elements of his work. In 1911, de Chirico moved to Paris and developed his first metaphysical paintings. During World War I, he continued this style of painting in Ferrara alongside Carlo Carrà and Giorgio Morandi. *Pittura metafisica* combines representational motifs with unsettling combinations of objects detached from their usual contexts, exerting a significant influence on the later Surrealists. From the late 1920s onwards, de Chirico turned toward a classicizing visual style. In addition to paintings, he created sculptures, graphic works, writings, and stage designs. From 1948 until his death on November 20, 1978, he lived and worked permanently in Rome.
