Zoran Music* (Bukovica 1909 - 2005 Venice) Canale della Guidecca aquatint/paper 13,5 x 19 cm signed Music, numbered 64/100 SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE € 250 - 400 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE € 250 Anton Zoran Mušič was born on February 12, 1909, in Bukovica near Görz (Gorizia), which was then part of Austria-Hungary. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb and undertook extensive journeys through Dalmatia, Spain, and France during the 1930s. The barren landscapes of Dalmatia, the world of peasants and shepherds, and depictions of horses became recurring themes in his early paintings. In 1943, Mušič settled in Venice. In October 1944, he was arrested there by the Gestapo and deported to the Dachau concentration camp. At great personal risk, he created drawings of prisoners, piles of corpses, hanged victims, and crematoria. Only a few of these sheets survived after his liberation in 1945; they form the immediate artistic origin of his later engagement with the Holocaust. After the war, Mušič divided his time between Venice and Paris. In Venice, he created quiet cityscapes and portraits of his wife, Ida Barbarigo; at the same time, he developed a distinctive series of horse paintings known as the Cavallini. His painting style became increasingly pared-down, characterized by earthy, muted tones and a visual language hovering between figuration and abstraction. From 1970 onwards, Mušič revisited his memories of Dachau. The series Nous ne sommes pas les derniers ("We Are Not the Last") depicts nearly monochromatic pictorial spaces transformed into mass graves, framing the camp experience as a universal testament to human suffering and enduring violence. He died in Venice on May 25, 2005. PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights and platform fee. In the case of normal taxation (marked ° at the estimate), a premium of 24% is added to the highest bid. The mandatory sales tax is added to the sum of the highest bid, the buyer's premium and platform fee. This amounts to 13% for paintings, drawings, graphic works and sculptures and 20% for photographs and all other items. The buyer's premium amounts to 28% in case of differential taxation. The sales tax is included in the differential taxation.
