Günther Förg* (Füssen 1952 - 2013 Freiburg im Breisgau) Untitled, 1994 lithography/paper 77,5 x 57,5 cm signed Foerg, dated 94 numbered 11/100 SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE € 300 - 500 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE € 300 From 1973 to 1979, Förg studied painting under Karl Fred Dahmen at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. Influenced by German Informel, he initially created predominantly black and gray monochrome paintings. He viewed the color gray as an open, neutral zone between black and white; these early works thus consciously set themselves apart from the Neo-Expressionist painting that dominated the era. From the early 1980s onwards, Förg also worked with large-format photography. He focused particularly on European modernist architecture—including Bauhaus structures, Fascist-era buildings, and post-war architecture—directing his gaze toward facades, windows, lines, shadows, and structural details. His photographs address both the aesthetic radicalism and the historical and ideological ambivalence of modern architecture. In the mid-1980s, Förg began creating his renowned lead paintings: lead sheets mounted on wooden frames and painted over with acrylic. Creases, traces of oxidation, scratches, and the matte heaviness of the metal remain visible, blurring the boundaries between painting, relief, and object. Later, Förg also worked with aluminum, copper, bronze, wood, and canvas. From the 1990s, he produced more colorful series, including the "grid paintings," in which he painted geometric grids freehand, thereby combining the rigor of modernist order with spontaneity and irregularity. Alongside these, he created wall works, sculptures, and pieces for public spaces. Förg taught first in Karlsruhe and later as a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, where he remained active until his death. PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights and platform fee. In the case of normal taxation (marked ° at the estimate), a premium of 24% is added to the highest bid. The sales tax is included in the differential taxation.
