Martha Jungwirth* (born 1940 in Vienna) Outrigger boat Bali, 1995 watercolor/paper 20 x 27,5 cm signed Martha Jungwirth, dated 95 inscribed Bali SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE € 3000 - 5000 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE € 3000 Martha Jungwirth is an Austrian painter and a significant figure in contemporary Austrian art. Her work occupies the space between figuration and abstraction, characterized by a free, gestural, and intensely colorful painting style. Her large-format watercolors and oil paintings, in particular, are distinguished by spontaneous mark-making, transparent fields of color, and a strong sense of physical immediacy. Jungwirth studied under Carl Unger at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna from 1956 to 1963 and subsequently taught there from 1967 to 1977. While still a student, she received the Msgr. Otto Mauer Prize in 1961, followed by the Theodor Körner Prize in 1964 and the Joan Miró Prize in 1966. In 1968, Jungwirth was the only woman among the co-founders of the artist group "Wirklichkeiten" (Realities), which also included Wolfgang Herzig, Kurt Kocherscheidt, Peter Pongratz, Franz Ringel, and Robert Zeppel-Sperl. Despite this affiliation, she early on developed a distinctive visual language that cannot be clearly categorized as either representational or purely abstract painting. She participated in documenta 6 in Kassel in 1977. Jungwirth lives and works in Vienna. Her work has been featured in numerous international exhibitions, including shows at the Kunsthalle Krems in 2014 and a major solo exhibition at the Albertina in 2018. She received the Grand Austrian State Prize for her lifetime achievement in 2021, having previously been awarded the Oskar Kokoschka Prize in 2018. PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights and platform fee. In the case of normal taxation (marked ° at the estimate), a premium of 24% is added to the highest bid.
