A.R. Penck (Ralf Winkler)* (Dresden 1939 - 2017 Zurich) 666 color lithography/paper 65 x 47 cm signed ar. penck SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE € 500 - 800 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE € 500 Ralf Winkler, better known by the artist name A.R. Penck, was born in Dresden in 1939 and ranks among the most significant German artists of the post-war era. His multifaceted body of work encompasses painting, drawing, sculpture, and artist's books, and is characterized by a deliberately pared-down visual language of stick figures, signs, and symbols with an archaic quality. Under the name A.R. Penck, he developed a visual system of signs that engages with questions of communication, society, history, and human existence. Emerging from the Dresden art scene and working under the conditions of the GDR, Penck established a distinctive artistic position outside the official art establishment. His so-called "Standart" works combine gestural painting with a universal language of signs, engaging in a dynamic dialogue with the approaches of German Neo-Expressionism and the Neue Wilde (New Fauves)—artists such as Georg Baselitz, Markus Lüpertz, and Jörg Immendorff. At the same time, connections to prehistoric art, cave painting, Art Informel, and conceptual art are evident. Penck’s iconic stick figures and signs possess an immediacy that is simultaneously enigmatic: they reduce complex social systems to elemental forms, turning the viewer into an interpreter. Following his move to the West—and later to Zurich—he continuously expanded his creative output to include sculpture, bronze works, and experimental media. In doing so, A.R. Penck left behind a body of work that bridges the realms of abstract art, figurative painting, and a universal, coded visual language.
