Heinz Stangl* (Vienna 1942 - 2008 Vienna) In the kitchen, 1972 watercolor and pencil/paper 34,8 x 24,8 cm signed Heinz Stangl, dated 1972 SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE € 400 - 600 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE € 400 Heinz Stangl was an Austrian painter and graphic artist associated with Viennese post-war modernism, focusing on portraits, figurative compositions, and urban scenes. Born in Vienna in 1942, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna under Maximilian Melcher from 1961 to 1967; he began participating in Vienna Secession exhibitions in 1970, worked as a freelance artist in Vienna from 1975 onwards, held a portfolio exhibition at the Secession in 1978, and—starting in 1980—created large-format oil paintings and prints characterized by figurative intensity. Stangl depicted seated women, nudes, and urban festivities using impasto application, expressive brushwork, and psychological depth, drawing influence from the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism, the classical academic tradition, and contemporary realism; his work encompassed oil paintings, watercolors, and lithographs distinguished by dynamic composition and emotional presence. Key figures and concepts relevant to the art-historical contextualization of his work include his influential Academy teachers Maximilian Melcher and Albert Paris Gütersloh; the Vienna Secession and the Albertina (Vienna) as central exhibition and collection venues; and the broader landscape of post-war Viennese painting, particularly within the circles of the Academy of Fine Arts and Fantastic Realism. In this context, artists such as Wolfgang Herzig, Kurt Kocherscheidt, Peter Pongratz, Rudolf Schönwald, Siegfried Anzinger, Hubert Schmalix, Robert Zeppel-Sperl, Ernst Skricka, Edgar Jené, Arik Brauer, Ernst Fuchs, Rudolf Hausner, and Fritz Janschka—who, alongside Stangl, represent diverse facets of figurative, expressive, and fantastic painting in post-1945 Austria—serve as reference points for situating his oeuvre stylistically and thematically. PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights and platform fee. In the case of normal taxation (marked ° at the estimate), a premium of 24% is added to the highest bid. The mandatory sales tax is added to the sum of the highest bid, the buyer's premium and platform fee. This amounts to 13% for paintings, drawings, graphic works and sculptures and 20% for photographs and all other items. The buyer's premium amounts to 28% in case of differential taxation. The sales tax is included in the differential taxation.
