Karl Prantl* (Pöttsching 1923 - 2010 Pöttsching) Bronze sculpture Bronze 37 x 19 x 19 cm SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE € 3000 - 6000 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE € 3000 Karl Prantl was born on November 5, 1923, in Pöttsching, Burgenland. After World War II, he studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna from 1946 to 1952 under Albert Paris Gütersloh and attended life drawing classes taught by Herbert Boeckl. He began creating his first sculptural works in the winter of 1950/51 and largely taught himself the art of stone carving. Within the context of Austrian post-war sculpture, he occupies a distinctive position alongside Fritz Wotruba: while Wotruba transformed the human figure into tectonic volumes, Prantl focused on material, mass, surface, and space. Working in the St. Margarethen quarry proved pivotal for Prantl. From 1958 onwards, he created sculptures there from local limestone; their block-like forms mediate between geometric order and organic effect, inviting a slow, physical mode of perception in relation to nature, light, and the landscape. He is comparable to international sculptors such as Constantin Brâncuși, Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth, Isamu Noguchi, and Eduardo Chillida, all of whom placed material, elemental form, emptiness, and sculptural space at the center of their work. In 1959, Prantl, together with Friedrich Czagan and Heinrich Deutsch, initiated the first Symposium of European Sculptors at the Roman quarry in St. Margarethen. The participation of international artists—including Makoto Fujiwara and Makio Yamaguchi—launched a symposium movement with global impact and expanded the scope of sculpture to encompass the landscape and art in public spaces. Prantl died on October 8, 2010, in Pöttsching. PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights and platform fee. In the case of normal taxation (marked ° at the estimate), a premium of 24% is added to the highest bid. The mandatory sales tax is added to the sum of the highest bid, the buyer's premium and platform fee. This amounts to 13% for paintings, drawings, graphic works and sculptures and 20% for photographs and all other items. The buyer's premium amounts to 28% in case of differential taxation. The sales tax is included in the differential taxation.
