Karl Rössing* (Gmunden 1897 - 1987 Wels) Still life with shoe trees, 1924 Oil on canvas 34,5 x 40 cm dated 24, monogrammed KR verso inscribed Karl Rössing, Geschenk von Sabine Bloch Jan. 1984 SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE € 5000 - 8000 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE € 5000 Karl Rößing was an Austrian painter and graphic artist associated with Styrian Modernism, focusing primarily on landscapes and sacred art. Born in Gmunden in 1897—the son of a hotelier—he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna from 1919 to 1925 under Rudolf Bacher and Karl Sterrer. Both instructors provided him with a solid foundation in drawing, figuration, and pictorial composition—skills that remained defining elements of his subsequent work. From 1930 onwards, Rößing participated in exhibitions held by the Graz Art Association (*Grazer Kunstverein*), thereby becoming part of a key forum within the Styrian art scene. His work occupies a space between the Vienna Secession—whose legacy endured in his approach to decorative surface design and the significance of line—and a representational realism. In doing so, Rößing combined regional motifs with a distinctive, expressively condensed visual language. Starting in 1946, he taught at the Upper Austrian Institute for Chemical Education and Research in Wels. From 1950, he created altarpieces and murals for churches in the Traunviertel region. His sacred art fuses religious themes with monumental composition, dramatic lighting, and a palpable affinity for Baroque painting. Rößing also painted Upper Austrian lake landscapes, portraits, and religious scenes using oil, watercolor, and fresco techniques. His work is characterized by a rich, impasto application of paint, dynamic brushwork, and a deep connection to the landscape and region. PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights and platform fee. In the case of normal taxation (marked ° at the estimate), a premium of 24% is added to the highest bid. The sales tax is included in the differential taxation.
