Gerhild Diesner* (Innsbruck 1915 - 1995 Innsbruck) Still life, 1958 oil/canvas 70 x 70 cm signed Diesner, dated 58 SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE °€ 10000 - 16000 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE °€ 10000 From 1932 to 1935, Gerhild Diesner took a life-drawing course with Professor Comploj in Innsbruck while simultaneously attending a textile course at a vocational school. Starting in 1930, she spent her summer months in England each year, eventually moving to London from 1935 to 1937. There, she attended the Chelsea Art School and the School of Art in Brighton. These early stays gave her access to international modernism; the impulses she gathered there later evolved into her own distinctive, richly colored style of painting. In 1937, she moved to Munich to study commercial art at the Academy of Applied Arts. She relocated to Paris in 1943, where she began studies at the Académie André Lhote and the École de la Grande Chaumière. Lhote’s synthesis of Cubist pictorial structure, figuration, and classical composition provided her with significant technical and formal inspiration. At the same time, Diesner developed a preference for expressive, luminous color—a trait that aligns her work with Fauvism and Expressionism. Key points of reference include Henri Matisse, Paul Gauguin, and Vincent van Gogh, all of whom treated color as an independent vehicle for conveying mood, space, and inner expression. The artist returned to Innsbruck a year later. In 1945, many of the works she had created in Paris and stored in Munich were destroyed by occupying troops. Nevertheless, she steadfastly continued her artistic development, arriving at a distinctive visual language shaped by landscapes, floral still lifes, and impressions from her travels in the south. Within the context of Austrian post-war painting, her work can be linked to the style of Werner Scholz and Walter Honeder—artists whose paintings combined intense color with a commitment to figurative representation. In 1948, Gerhild Diesner received an award for artistic achievement from the Tyrolean provincial government in conjunction with the "Tyrolean Art" exhibition. Between 1955 and 1975, she undertook numerous study trips to England, Portugal, and Italy, where the landscapes and lighting conditions further enriched her palette. In 1959, she was awarded the City of Innsbruck’s Advancement Prize for Painting; she received the title of Professor in 1975 and the Tyrol State Art Prize in 1995. PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights and platform fee. In the case of normal taxation (marked ° at the estimate), a premium of 24% is added to the highest bid. The mandatory sales tax is added to the sum of the highest bid, the buyer's premium and platform fee. This amounts to 13% for paintings, drawings, graphic works and sculptures and 20% for photographs and all other items. The buyer's premium amounts to 28% in case of differential taxation. The sales tax is included in the differential taxation.
