Richard Eberle* (Sulzbach-Altenwald 1918 - 2001 Saarbrücken) In the kitchen, 1965 oil/canvas 45,4 x 65 cm signed Eberle, dated 1965 SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE € 600 - 1200 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE € 600 Eberle grew up as the youngest of eight children in a working-class family in Altenwald, a mining town in the Saarland. He began drawing his immediate surroundings at an early age and decided as a child to become a painter. From 1934 to 1935, he attended the State School of Arts and Crafts in Saarbrücken; subsequently, he studied in Karl Caspar’s painting class in Munich. He also received a scholarship for study visits to the academies in Rome and Palermo. After World War II, Eberle worked as a freelance artist in the Saarland from 1946 to 1958. During this period, he created works including stained glass, sgraffiti, mosaics, and reliefs for churches, schools, funeral chapels, sports facilities, and private buildings in the Saarland, Rhineland-Palatinate, and Switzerland. One example is the stained-glass windows created in 1959 for the war memorial chapel in Mandelbachtal-Wittersheim. Figurative painting lies at the heart of his body of work. Eberle favored a restrained, narrative visual style, dedicating himself to portraits, self-portraits, nudes, still lifes, and interiors, as well as genre and everyday scenes. He also produced southern and maritime landscapes, views of his native Saarland, and depictions of the region's working and daily life. His works show an affinity with magical realism without abandoning observed reality. PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights and platform fee.
