Lisel Salzer* (Vienna 1906 - 2005 Seattle) Girl with doll, 1965 oil/canvas 66 x 50 cm signed Lisel Salzer, dated 65 SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE °€ 1400 - 2400 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE °€ 1400 Lisel Salzer grew up in a wealthy Jewish family in Vienna. Starting in 1922, she studied at the Vienna Women's Academy under Hermann Grom-Rottmayer and Ferdinand Kitt, completing her training in 1929. As early as 1928, she was one of the first female artists to exhibit at the Vienna Secession. A study trip to Paris that same year led her to the class of André Lhote and provided her with formative impressions of French modernism. Salzer maintained a studio in Vienna that became a meeting place for a circle of intellectual and artistic friends, including Hilde Spiel, Bettina Bauer-Ehrlich, Georg Ehrlich, and Erich Zeisl. Through Bettina and Georg Ehrlich, she was also connected to the Zinkenbach Artists' Colony. Figures active in that circle included Oskar Laske, Josef Dobrowsky, Ludwig Heinrich Jungnickel, Louise Merkel-Romée, Georg Merkel, Ernst Huber, and Gudrun Baudisch-Wittke. This artist community in the Salzkammergut region encompassed painting, graphic art, ceramics, and applied arts. As an Austrian-Jewish artist and émigré, Lisl Salzer represents a generation of artists whose careers were similarly interrupted by persecution and exile. Salzer’s early work comprises sensitive portraits, figurative compositions, and landscapes in oil, watercolor, and drawing. Being Jewish, she emigrated to New York via Paris in 1939. In the United States, she worked as a portrait painter and graphic artist, and—from 1945 onwards—as an enamel artist. After stays in Arizona and California, she moved to Seattle in 1950, where she exhibited at venues including the Frye Art Museum and the Seattle Art Museum. In 2002, she was the subject of a solo exhibition at the Zinkenbach Artists' Colony Museum, and in 2003, she received the Golden Medal of Merit of the State of Salzburg. Salzer died in Seattle in 2005. PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights and platform fee. In the case of normal taxation (marked ° at the estimate), a premium of 24% is added to the highest bid. The mandatory sales tax is added to the sum of the highest bid, the buyer's premium and platform fee. This amounts to 13% for paintings, drawings, graphic works and sculptures and 20% for photographs and all other items. The buyer's premium amounts to 28% in case of differential taxation. The sales tax is included in the differential taxation.
