Sylvain Vigny* (Vienna 1903 - 1970 Nice) Lively Beach scene, 1945 oil/cardboard 38 x 54,7 cm signed Vigny, dated 46 SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE °€ 800 - 1600 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE °€ 800 Sylvain Vigny was an Austrian-French painter of the 20th century. A self-taught artist, he began his career in Vienna before emigrating to France in the 1920s. He lived in Paris from 1929 to 1934 before settling in Nice. There, he exhibited at various galleries along the Côte d’Azur, at the Musée de Cannes, and in Switzerland. One of Vigny’s works was acquired by the Musée National d’Histoire et d’Art in Luxembourg. Although Vigny was represented in several French museums, he remained relatively little known in Austria. His body of work is characterized primarily by expressive landscape painting. His preferred subjects included Parisian street scenes, bustling beaches, Riviera boulevards, and striking floral still lifes. Dynamic compositions, energetic brushwork, and a distinctive use of color define the impression created by his works. Echoes of Maurice de Vlaminck can be detected in his Parisian cityscapes, while his darker color palette is at times reminiscent of Georges Rouault. His light, atmospheric beach scenes show parallels to the work of Raoul Dufy. Furthermore, Vigny’s painting belongs to the broader context of French Modernism, revealing connections to artists such as Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, André Derain, Marc Chagall, Jean Dubuffet, Fernand Léger, and Kees van Dongen. Influences from Post-Impressionism and the Nabis movement also serve as relevant art-historical contexts. His early years in Vienna also link Vigny to Austrian Modernism; notable figures and groups in this regard include Oskar Kokoschka, Egon Schiele, Rudolf Bacher, and Karl Sterrer, as well as the artistic circles of the Vienna Secession, the Hagenbund, and the Wiener Werkstätte. During his time in Nice, Vigny maintained ties with a circle of artists and friends that included Elfy Haindl-Lapoirie, Willy Eisenschitz, Jean Cassarini, and Claude Morini. PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights and platform fee. The sales tax is included in the differential taxation.
