He studied at the academy in Munich from 1922 to 1924 and subsequently in Paris. There, he came into contact with the Surrealist movement surrounding André Breton and engaged deeply with the currents of Surrealism as manifested in the work of Salvador Dalí, René Magritte, Joan Miró, Francis Picabia, Giorgio de Chirico, Roberto Matta, Man Ray, and Wolfgang Paalen. He traveled to Italy and Switzerland, and in 1935—labeled a "degenerate artist"—he relocated to Austria, where he lived until 1950. In post-war Vienna, Jené founded a Surrealist movement that served as the artistic starting point for the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism and profoundly influenced artists such as Ernst Fuchs, Arik Brauer, Anton Lehmden, Wolfgang Hutter, and Rudolf Hausner. PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights and platform fee. In the case of normal taxation (marked ° at the estimate), a premium of 24% is added to the highest bid. The mandatory sales tax is added to the sum of the highest bid, the buyer's premium and platform fee. This amounts to 13% for paintings, drawings, graphic works and sculptures and 20% for photographs and all other items. The buyer's premium amounts to 28% in case of differential taxation. The sales tax is included in the differential taxation.
