Kurt Gröger (Sternberg 1905 - 1952 Paris) Interior with view of Paris oil/canvas 73,3 x 54,1 cm Signature stamp K. Gröger SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE °€ 2000 - 4000 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE °€ 2000 Gröger was born the son of a textile manufacturer in Sternberg near Olmütz and showed an early aptitude for drawing. From 1923, he studied at the Dresden Academy of Art, where his teachers included Robert Sterl, Ferdinand Dorsch, Max Feldbauer, and Georg Lühring. His training in Dresden fostered a painting style influenced by Impressionism and expressive use of color. In the mid-1920s, Gröger lived in Paris for the first time; there, he moved within the circle of the Fauves—particularly Henri Matisse and Albert Marquet—and met his future wife, Simone Driay. After returning to Sternberg, he briefly managed the family business but remained active as an artist, exhibiting with groups such as the Metznerbund, the Ostrava Art Association, and the Prague Secession. Following the entry of German troops into his homeland in 1938, Gröger fled permanently to France with his Jewish wife. He joined the Czechoslovak Legion, fought as a volunteer against Nazi Germany, and became active in the Resistance after France's defeat. He was granted French citizenship in recognition of his service. During his time in Paris, he produced primarily oil paintings featuring cityscapes, interiors, still lifes, and figure studies. His works combine a vibrant, light-filled palette with an intimate, often poetic observation of everyday life. After the war, political circumstances left Gröger separated from his Moravian homeland and much of his property; in 1949, the Galerie Methey in Paris held a solo exhibition of his work. He died in Paris in 1952. PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights and platform fee. In the case of normal taxation (marked ° at the estimate), a premium of 24% is added to the highest bid. The mandatory sales tax is added to the sum of the highest bid, the buyer's premium and platform fee. This amounts to 13% for paintings, drawings, graphic works and sculptures and 20% for photographs and all other items. The buyer's premium amounts to 28% in case of differential taxation. The sales tax is included in the differential taxation.
