Endre Vadász (Szeged 1901 - 1944 Getterle) Girl in a Hungarian costume oil/canvas 90 x 72 cm signed Vadász SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE € 1200 - 2400 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE € 1200 The Hungarian painter and graphic artist Endre Vadász began his artistic training in 1918 under Ödön Heller at the Free School of Art in Szeged; he subsequently studied with Adolf Fényes and in Oszkár Glatz’s class at the College of Fine Arts. His other teachers included István Zádor and Viktor Olgyai. In the 1920s, Vadász led summer academy courses in Mohács, where regional folk costumes and peasant life inspired his poetic, fairy-tale-like, and "magical" images. Following a study trip to Italy and a stay in Paris made possible by Marcell Nemes, he engaged deeply with Japanese woodcuts, which had a lasting influence on his later graphic work. In 1929, he won first prize at the World’s Fair in Barcelona. Vadász regularly participated in exhibitions held by the Munkácsy Guild, the Pál Merse Society, and the Ernst Museum, as well as the Venice Biennale; his works were also shown in international group exhibitions in Oslo, Chicago, London, and Cleveland. After moving to Debrecen, Vadász worked as a drawing teacher at the Jewish Gymnasium and painted in Baia Mare between 1933 and 1935 before settling in Budapest in 1936. He became best known for his technically masterful etchings, engravings, woodcuts, and linocuts, though he also created tempera and oil paintings as well as numerous bookplates (ex-libris). His distinctive visual language defies classification within any specific school: it combines lyrical landscapes, folk motifs, and dreamlike scenes with precise graphic work influenced by Japanese woodcuts. His art historical circle includes Béni Ferenczy, Tibor Hetényi, Tibor Gergely, Brigitta Videky, Mária Lázár, Zsigmond Cselényi Walleshausen, Géza Boross, Ibolya Csengery, Gitta Gyenes, Ferenc Erdély, Ilona Bereczky, Olga Székely-Kovács, Mária Barta, Alice Endresz, Jenő Szabados, Gyula Derkovits, József Rippl-Rónai, László Moholy-Nagy, Victor Vasarely and Vilmos Aba-Novák. Retrospectives took place at the Ferenc Móra Museum in Szeged in 1971 and at the Hungarian National Gallery in 1982; Numerous works are now in the Déri Museum in Debrecen. Vadász and his wife died in the Gödöllő labor service camp in 1944 in connection with National Socialist persecution. PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights and platform fee. In the case of normal taxation (marked ° at the estimate), a premium of 24% is added to the highest bid. The mandatory sales tax is added to the sum of the highest bid, the buyer's premium and platform fee. This amounts to 13% for paintings, drawings, graphic works and sculptures and 20% for photographs and all other items. The buyer's premium amounts to 28% in case of differential taxation. The sales tax is included in the differential taxation.
