Uriel Birnbaum* (Vienna 1894 - 1956 Amersfoort) Messenger of Death indian ink/paper 19,4 x 13,5 cm signed Uriel SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE °€ 2000 - 3000 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE °€ 2000 An Austrian-Jewish painter, draughtsman, illustrator, poster designer and poet of the Viennese Modernist movement. Born in Vienna in 1894, the son of the philosopher Nathan Birnbaum; died in Amersfoort (Netherlands) in 1956. As a self-taught artist, he made a name for himself in 1918 with 21 drawings at the Vienna Secession’s spring exhibition and became known above all for his fantastical art and religious prints, which place him within the context of Jewish Modernism. His significant series include ‘Beings from Other Stars’, ‘A Path to God’, ‘The Dance of Death’, ‘The Worm’, ‘From World to World’ and ‘The End of the World’. His works can be situated within the broader context of artists such as Alfred Kubin, Egon Schiele and Koloman Moser, and reveal connections to Expressionist drawing as well as to a legitimist utopia. In addition, he wrote *Gläubige Kunst* (1919), composed sonnets such as *In Gottes Krieg* and created illustrations for *Daniel*, *Jonah*, *Alice in Wonderland* and Chaim Nachman Bialik, as well as commercial art, such as postcards for Agudas Yisroel. Following his war injury in 1915–17, which resulted in the amputation of his leg, he emigrated to the Netherlands in 1939 and lived there in hiding from 1943 to 1945 as a war invalid in a mixed marriage; his work thus also belongs within the context of art in exile. PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights and platform fee. In the case of normal taxation (marked ° at the estimate), a premium of 24% is added to the highest bid. The mandatory sales tax is added to the sum of the highest bid, the buyer's premium and platform fee. This amounts to 13% for paintings, drawings, graphic works and sculptures and 20% for photographs and all other items. The buyer's premium amounts to 28% in case of differential taxation. The sales tax is included in the differential taxation.
