After attending the School of Arts and Crafts in Nuremberg, he initially worked as a restorer at the Altheimer studio in Regensburg before returning to Passau in 1920 to work as an art educator. His oeuvre encompasses landscapes, cityscapes, portraits, still lifes, nudes, and illustrations; particularly in his oil paintings, he developed a distinctive visual language characterized by increasing constructive simplification. His engagement with modern landscape painting was significantly shaped by Paul Cézanne and the latter's influence on the development of Cubism and modern abstraction. Wörlen was a member of the artist groups Der Fels, Gruppe der 6, and the Hagenbund, as well as the Donau-Wald-Gruppe from 1947 onwards. His artistic milieu during the interwar period and the post-war modernist era links him notably with Fritz Fuhrken, Franz Bronstert, and Carry Hauser—artists whose works likewise bridge the gap between expressive figuration, landscape painting, and an increasingly modern formal language. Wörlen thus represents a distinctive variant of South German and Austrian-influenced modernism, in which Expressionism, Cubism, New Objectivity, and abstracting landscape painting converge.
