Georg Philipp Wörlen (Dillingen an der Donau 1886 - 1954 Passau) Barges, 1921 lithograph/paper 43,2 x 34 cm signed G. Ph. Wörlen, dated 1921 inscribed Hafen, dedicated s/l Olga G. Ph. W. numbered 18/30 SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE € 200 - 400 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE € 200 Georg Philipp Wörlen (1886–1954) was a German painter and graphic artist whose diverse body of work spans Impressionism, Expressionism, Cubism, and New Objectivity, later increasingly embracing an abstracting formal language. After attending the School of Arts and Crafts in Nuremberg, he initially worked as a restorer at the Altheimer studio in Regensburg before returning to Passau in 1920 to work as an art educator. His oeuvre encompasses landscapes, cityscapes, portraits, still lifes, nudes, and illustrations; particularly in his oil paintings, he developed a distinctive visual language characterized by increasing constructive simplification. His engagement with modern landscape painting was significantly shaped by Paul Cézanne and the latter's influence on the development of Cubism and modern abstraction. Wörlen was a member of the artist groups Der Fels, Gruppe der 6, and the Hagenbund, as well as the Donau-Wald-Gruppe from 1947 onwards. His artistic milieu during the interwar period and the post-war modernist era links him notably with Fritz Fuhrken, Franz Bronstert, and Carry Hauser—artists whose works likewise bridge the gap between expressive figuration, landscape painting, and an increasingly modern formal language. Wörlen thus represents a distinctive variant of South German and Austrian-influenced modernism, in which Expressionism, Cubism, New Objectivity, and abstracting landscape painting converge. PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights and platform fee. In the case of normal taxation (marked ° at the estimate), a premium of 24% is added to the highest bid. The mandatory sales tax is added to the sum of the highest bid, the buyer's premium and platform fee. This amounts to 13% for paintings, drawings, graphic works and sculptures and 20% for photographs and all other items. The buyer's premium amounts to 28% in case of differential taxation. The sales tax is included in the differential taxation.
