Sepp Biehler* (Konstanz 1907 - 1973 Waldshut) The little harbour, 1931 oil/cardboard 50 x 70 cm monogrammed SB, dated 1931 cf. Catalogue: Sepp Biehler, 2003, p. 111, GI-1931-13 SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE € 1600 - 2600 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE € 1600 The German painter Sepp Biehler (1907 Konstanz – 1973 Bernau in the Black Forest) completed an apprenticeship at the "Alt-Konstanz" porcelain manufactory in 1923 and studied at the Baden State Art School in Karlsruhe from 1925 to 1928 under Ernst Würtenberger. After study trips, he exhibited his work and, from the late 1920s onward, became involved in the New Objectivity movement, as one of its leading representatives on Lake Constance alongside Adolf Dietrich and Rudolf Wacker. In 1938, he founded the Konstanz Painters' Group 1938 with Elisabeth Mühlenweg, Fritz Mühlenweg, Alexander Rihm, and Werner Rohland, creating decorative murals for buildings and Stations of the Cross cycles for churches in and around Konstanz. He served in the Second World War, was wounded, and taken prisoner; afterward, he stayed in Hamburg in 1955 and in Boxberg in 1957, where he received commissions for mosaics, sgraffito, stone carvings, and stained glass windows. After 1945, his style changed to figurative abstraction, with religious motifs, landscapes and figure paintings; in 1969 he moved to Bernau in the Black Forest, shaping the cityscape in the Main-Tauber district and the Baden region through monumental wall designs.
