Franz Traunfellner* (Gerersdorf 1913 - 1986 Gerersdorf) Moonlight Night, 1973 woodcut/paper 31 x 46 cm signed Franz Traunfellner, dated 73 inscribed Orig. Holzschnitt (Handdruck), Mondnacht SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE € 700 - 1400 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE € 700 Franz Traunfellner was a significant Austrian graphic artist and painter, and is considered a key figure in Austrian post-war art. After acquiring woodcut tools by chance in his youth, he taught himself the arts of woodcut and wood engraving. He received instruction in etching from Professor Kromar von Hohenwolf in Melk. Following the Second World War, Traunfellner returned to his family’s farm, where he devoted himself intensively to art alongside his agricultural work. He produced woodcuts, wood engravings, etchings, and drypoint works, and later, lithographs as well. In 1956, a scholarship enabled him to attend the Graphische Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt (Graphic Arts Training and Research Institute) in Vienna, where he deepened his knowledge of lithographic techniques. Through this, he developed a versatile body of graphic work—spanning woodcut and wood engraving to etching, drypoint, and lithography—that established him as a major representative of Austrian original graphic art and printmaking. His work centers on the landscape of the Waldviertel, which became a unique source of inspiration for him. His depictions of landscapes, animals, and scenes of rural life bear witness to a deep connection with the region and a keen observation of both people and nature. In his characteristic black-and-white graphic works, landscape, forest, animals, and rural daily life coalesce into expressive visual worlds. Study trips took him to Southern Europe, Paris, and the Worpswede artists' colony—home to artists such as Heinrich Vogeler, Alfred Schulze, and Carlo Weidemeyer—yet the Waldviertel, with its people and animals, remained the central focal point of his artistic output. PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights and platform fee. The sales tax is included in the differential taxation.
