Wilhelm Jaruska* (Vienna 1916 - 2008 Vienna) Wood collectors, 1945 pencil/paper 30 x 42 cm signed W. Jaruska, dated 1945 inscribed Holzsammler SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE °€ 900 - 1600 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE °€ 900 A 20th-century Austrian painter, art educator, and graphic artist, he was a proponent of post-1950 modernism and figurative painting. He studied at the School of Arts and Crafts under Wilhelm Müller-Hofmann—alongside Arthur Zelger, Rudolf Korunka, and Paul Kurt Schwarz—and went on to become a highly successful poster artist and commercial graphic designer in the post-war era. From 1954 to 1976, he taught poster art and illustration at the *Graphische Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt* (Graphic Arts Research and Teaching Institute); his students included Manfred Deix and Gottfried Helnwein, among others, and he thus played a significant role in Austrian visual culture and satire. In his independent artistic work, he engaged deeply with Austrian Expressionism—specifically the work of Egon Schiele, Oskar Kokoschka, and Herbert Boeckl—and later with the approaches of artists such as Rudolf Hausner, Wolfgang Hutter, Anton Lehmden, Arik Brauer, Ernst Fuchs, and Friedensreich Hundertwasser. At the same time, his work touches upon movements such as *Neue Sachlichkeit* (New Objectivity) and contemporary landscape painting, encompassing scenery from the Waldviertel and Mühlviertel regions as well as mountain, field, and alpine motifs from Carinthia and Tyrol. Beyond his portraits and figurative works, connections can be drawn to artists such as Edgar Jené, Arnulf Neuwirth, Franz Rogler, Rudolf Hoflehner, Rudolf Pointner, Max Weiler, Kurt Kocherscheidt, Paul Flora, and Alfred Hrdlicka; it is within this artistic milieu that his figurative, modernist-influenced painting can be situated in terms of art history. PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights and platform fee. In the case of normal taxation (marked ° at the estimate), a premium of 24% is added to the highest bid. The mandatory sales tax is added to the sum of the highest bid, the buyer's premium and platform fee. This amounts to 13% for paintings, drawings, graphic works and sculptures and 20% for photographs and all other items. The buyer's premium amounts to 28% in case of differential taxation. The sales tax is included in the differential taxation.
