Anton Steinhart* (Salzburg 1889 - 1964 Salzburg) Winter forest oil/cardboard 61 x 46 cm signed A. Steinhart SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE € 1000 - 2000 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE € 1000 Anton Steinhart was an Austrian painter and graphic artist whose body of work spans oil painting, landscapes, and portraits, while drawing upon Realism, Impressionism, and Expressionism. Hailing from a middle-class Salzburg family, he attended the private art school of Salzburg landscape painter Franz Hinterholzer as a child—at his own request. Study trips took him to England and Italy, as well as to Munich and Paris for his formal education. After serving in World War I (1915–1918), Steinhart returned to Salzburg. Alongside his work as a photographer at Photo Ellinger, he produced numerous ink and reed-pen drawings—particularly of performances at the Salzburg Festival—which were published in a portfolio by Friedrich Welz in 1960. His painting focused primarily on landscapes and works created during his repeated stays in Italy. In art-historical terms, Steinhart is associated with Austrian Modernism and can be linked to the artistic positions of Karl Revy, Lois Pregartbauer, and Matthias Herrmann. He maintained particularly close friendships with Anton Faistauer, Anton Kolig, Alfred Kubin, and Carl Moll. His landscape paintings and drawings stand both in the tradition of Austrian plein-air and landscape painting—as shaped by figures such as Rudolf von Alt and Franz Hinterholzer—and within the broader context of the Vienna Secession, the Neue Galerie Wien, and Austrian interwar Modernism. Today, Steinhart’s works are held in collections including the Salzburg Museum, the Museum der Moderne Salzburg, and the Albertina in Vienna. Exhibitions of his work were held at the Albertina in Vienna in 1945 and 1949, and at the Neue Galerie Wolfgang Gurlitt-Museum in Linz in 1956; his connections to Friedrich Welz and the Salzburg art scene also place him within the cultural milieu of the Salzburg Festival and 20th-century Austrian art. PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights and platform fee. In the case of normal taxation (marked ° at the estimate), a premium of 24% is added to the highest bid. The mandatory sales tax is added to the sum of the highest bid, the buyer's premium and platform fee. This amounts to 13% for paintings, drawings, graphic works and sculptures and 20% for photographs and all other items. The buyer's premium amounts to 28% in case of differential taxation. The sales tax is included in the differential taxation.
