Otto Rudolf Schatz* (Vienna 1900 - 1961 Vienna) Cathedral woodcut/paper 17,8 x 22,1 cm monogrammed ORS SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE °€ 300 - 500 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE °€ 300 An Austrian painter and graphic artist of the 20th century, primarily during the interwar period, he studied at the Vienna School of Applied Arts under Anton von Kenner, Franz Cizek, and Oskar Strnad, and initially worked as a graphic designer and illustrator for Arthur Roessler and Josef Luitpold Stern. From 1928 to 1938, he was a member of the Hagenbund, and from 1946, of the Vienna Secession. During the Second World War, he lived with his Jewish wife in Prague and Brno. In 1944, he was sent to the Gräditz concentration camp and liberated by Soviet troops in 1945. His oeuvre encompasses woodcuts, watercolors, oil paintings, still lifes, vedute, portraits, socially critical works, murals, mosaics, and graffiti for residential buildings—influenced by Expressionism and New Objectivity, with an early interest in Egon Schiele and, in the 1920s and 30s, objective, sometimes erotic, woodcuts. His stylistic diversity is reminiscent of Gustav Klimt, Carl Moll, Josef Hoffmann, Albert Paris Gütersloh, Lois Pregartbauer, Rudolf von Alt, Oskar Kokoschka, Albin Egger-Lienz, Koloman Moser, Richard Gerstl, Broncia Koller-Pinell and Anton Mahringer. Within the circle of the Hagenbund and the Wiener Werkstätte, he was close to colleagues such as Friedrich Aduatz, Robin Christian Andersen, Franz Barwig the Elder, Leopold Blauensteiner, Georg Ehrlich, Carl Fahringer, Josef Floch, Beni Ferenczy, Tibor Gergely, Gustav Gurschner, Felix Albrecht Harta, Karl Hauk, Carry Hauser, Ludwig Heinrich Jungnickel, Rudolf Junk, Maximilian Kahrer, Eduard Kasparides, Wilhelm Kaufmann, Oskar Laske, Georg Mayer-Marton, Georg Merkel, Ernst Paar, Anton Peschka, Robert Philippi, Maximilian Reinitz, Albert Reuss, Fritz Schwarz-Waldegg, Eduard Thöny, Viktor Tischler, Georg Philipp Wörlen, Bettina Ehrlich, Louise Merkel-Romée, Frieda Salvendy, Lilly Steiner and Rudolf Bacher; his works are represented in the Belvedere, Vienna Museum.
