Ludwig Gottfried Schmidbauer* (Würzburg 1890 - 1975 Kirchberg) In the iron foundry II, 1935 oil/canvas 71 x 55 cm signed L. G. Schmidbauer, dated 1935 SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE °€ 1000 - 1600 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE °€ 1000 Ludwig Gottfried Schmidbauer was a German painter and graphic artist associated with Franconian Realism, focusing on landscapes, church interiors, and religious motifs. Born in Würzburg in 1890 to a teacher, he studied at the Munich Academy of Art under Peter Halm and Max Doerner from 1910 to 1916. He began exhibiting with the New Munich Secession in 1925, relocated to Middle Franconia in 1930, worked as an independent artist in Kirchberg from 1945 onwards, and created altarpieces and murals for Franconian churches starting in 1950. Schmidbauer depicted Franconian villages, Romanesque churches, and portraits of farmers using clear line work, a transparent watercolor technique, and an atmosphere of sacred stillness; his style was influenced by the art of Der Blaue Reiter, the Franconian regional style, and a religiously inspired realism. He produced oil paintings, watercolors, etchings, and frescoes characterized by pared-down compositions and spiritual depth. Artists and concepts relevant to contextualizing his work include his teachers Peter Halm and Max Doerner; the New Munich Secession as a key exhibition venue; the 20th-century traditions of landscape painting and religious art; and Realism as a broad stylistic category.
