Josef Stoitzner-Millinger* (Vienna 1911 - 1982 Ebendorf) Steelmill, Voest, 1956 gouache/paper 57,7 x 80,5 cm signed Stoitzner Millinger, dated 56 SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE °€ 800 - 1200 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE °€ 800 Siegfried Stoitzner was an Austrian painter and art postcard publisher, born as the third son of the painter Karl Stoitzner. His uncle was the landscape painter Konstantin Stoitzner, and Josef Stoitzner was his cousin. From 1909 to 1913, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. After serving in the First World War, he moved to Furth near Göttweig in 1918, where he worked with his brother Otto Stoitzner and founded the postcard publisher Heimatland. After his marriage to Albertina Stranzinger, he moved to Dürnstein and ran an inn until 1936. In 1919, he was a founding member of the Wachau Artists' Association. His works were exhibited at the Große Deutsche Kunstausstellung in Munich in 1938 and 1940. In 1941, he became a member of the Gesellschaft bildender Künstler Wiens (Künstlerhaus). After the death of his first wife, he married the academic painter Etta Katzenbeißer. Stoitzner's oeuvre is dominated by landscapes and portraits, as well as genre and hunting scenes, with a particular focus on the Wachau and Waldviertel. Working in painting and watercolour, he continued the Austrian tradition of landscape art associated with artists such as Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller, Friedrich von Amerling, Eduard Ameseder and Willy Eisenschitz, while his work can also be viewed in the wider context of Austrian modernism alongside artists such as Richard Gerstl, Egon Schiele, Herbert Boeckl, Josef Dobrowsky, Albert Paris Gütersloh, Friedensreich Hundertwasser, Arik Brauer, Wolfgang Hollegha and Ernst Fuchs. Stoitzner received the Gold Medal of Honour of the Vienna Künstlerhaus in 1961, the title of Professor in 1963, the Martin Johann Schmidt Prize in 1967, honorary citizenship of Dürnstein in 1971 and honorary membership of the Krems Wine Brotherhood in 1976. PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights and platform fee. In the case of normal taxation (marked ° at the estimate), a premium of 24% is added to the highest bid. The mandatory sales tax is added to the sum of the highest bid, the buyer's premium and platform fee. This amounts to 13% for paintings, drawings, graphic works and sculptures and 20% for photographs and all other items. The buyer's premium amounts to 28% in case of differential taxation. The sales tax is included in the differential taxation.
