Elisabeth Karlinsky* (Kasten 1904 - 1994 Græsted) Glass window design watercolor and charcoal/paper 22,5 x 7 cm SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE € 800 - 1000 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE € 800 Elisabeth Karlinsky was born on May 19, 1904, in Kasten near Böheimkirchen, Lower Austria, and died on October 13, 1994, in Græsted, Denmark. A painter, graphic artist, and glass artist, she came from a family of artists: her father, Anton Karlinsky, was a landscape painter, and her brother, also named Anton Karlinsky, was artistically active. After moving to Denmark and marrying the poet and painter Hans Scherfig, she used the names Elisabeth Scherfig-Karlinsky and Karlinsky-Scherfig from 1931 onwards. In 1921, Karlinsky enrolled at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts (Kunstgewerbeschule), where she studied under instructors including Franz Čižek, Rudolf von Larisch, Bertold Löffler, Rosalia Rothansl, and Reinhold Klaus. In Čižek’s class on the theory of ornamental forms, she emerged as a key figure of Viennese Kineticism. Her work translates movement, rhythm, and spatial dynamics into an abstract, geometrically structured visual language, combining influences from Cubism, Futurism, and Constructivism with the design sensibilities of the applied arts. Together with fellow students Erika Giovanna Klien and My Ullmann, she gained early recognition through Čižek’s international network; in 1925, her work was exhibited at the Exposition internationale des arts décoratifs et industriels modernes in Paris. Her body of work encompasses painting and graphic art as well as glass painting, textile and costume design, illustration, interior design, and window dressing. In 1928, she took over Erika Giovanna Klien’s teaching position at the Elizabeth Duncan School in Kleßheim before teaching at the Walden School in New York from 1928 to 1930, where she also designed window displays for stores such as Macy’s and Gimbel’s. From 1931 onwards, Karlinsky lived and worked in Copenhagen as a freelance artist, illustrator, and interior designer. As a long-standing member of the Corner artists' association, she helped shape its artistic life until her death. PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights and platform fee. In the case of normal taxation (marked ° at the estimate), a premium of 24% is added to the highest bid. The mandatory sales tax is added to the sum of the highest bid, the buyer's premium and platform fee. This amounts to 13% for paintings, drawings, graphic works and sculptures and 20% for photographs and all other items. The buyer's premium amounts to 28% in case of differential taxation. The sales tax is included in the differential taxation.
