Maria Ullmann* (Vienna 1905 - 1995 Konstanz) Dancer, 1925 pastel/paper 29,7 x 20,8 cm monogrammed MY, dated 1925 SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE € 1000 - 1400 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE € 1000 Maria "My" Ullmann was born in Vienna on August 4, 1905, and died in 1995 in Konstanz on Lake Constance. A painter, graphic artist, stage and costume designer, and creator of interiors and spatial designs, she was one of the most versatile Austrian female artists of the 20th century. She usually signed her works "My" and is therefore also known by the name My Ullmann. Ullmann enrolled at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts (Kunstgewerbeschule) as early as 1921, studying general and ornamental form theory, glass painting, and sculpture. In Franz Čižek’s class, she encountered Viennese Kineticism and became one of the movement's co-founders and leading figures. Together with Erika Giovanna Klien and Elisabeth Karlinsky, she developed a visual language focused on movement, rhythm, and simultaneous image sequences, independently advancing impulses derived from Cubism, Futurism, and Constructivism. Ullmann’s work is characterized by crystalline forms, wavy and zigzag lines, and dynamic, intensely colored compositions. In addition to Kineticist paintings and drawings, she created commercial graphic art, textile and furniture designs, stage and costume designs, as well as spatial and wall designs and art integrated into architecture. Her diverse body of work—which consciously transcended the boundaries between fine and applied art—was shaped by her time in Vienna, Berlin, Münster, Zurich, and finally Konstanz. PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights and platform fee. In the case of normal taxation (marked ° at the estimate), a premium of 24% is added to the highest bid. The mandatory sales tax is added to the sum of the highest bid, the buyer's premium and platform fee. This amounts to 13% for paintings, drawings, graphic works and sculptures and 20% for photographs and all other items. The buyer's premium amounts to 28% in case of differential taxation. The sales tax is included in the differential taxation.
