Wilhelm Thöny (Graz 1888 - 1949 New York) Gardener, around 1922 watercolor and pencil/paper 22,5 x 29,8 cm estate stamp Wilhelm Thöny SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE € 2000 - 4000 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE € 2000 Wilhelm Thöny (1888–1949), an Austrian painter, graphic artist, etcher, and illustrator, is considered one of the leading figures of Austrian Modernism. From 1908 to 1912, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich under Angelo Jank and Gabriel von Hackl, supplementing his studies with musical training in singing and piano. As a co-founder of the Munich Secession, he maintained a lifelong friendship with Alfred Kubin, served as a regimental painter in the First World War, producing portrait studies and illustrations, and founded the Graz Secession in 1923. In 1925, he married Thea Herrmann-Trautner, daughter of the painter Frank S. Herrmann, and lived in Paris from 1931 to 1938, having first traveled there in 1929. In 1938, he emigrated with his Jewish wife to New York, where a fire in 1948 destroyed the majority of his works. His oeuvre encompasses diverse landscapes, dynamic cityscapes of Paris and New York, and genre scenes that incorporate influences from Edvard Munch and August Macke and combine elements of Impressionism, Expressionism, and Abstraction. PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights and platform fee. In the case of normal taxation (marked ° at the estimate), a premium of 24% is added to the highest bid. The mandatory sales tax is added to the sum of the highest bid, the buyer's premium and platform fee. This amounts to 13% for paintings, drawings, graphic works and sculptures and 20% for photographs and all other items. The buyer's premium amounts to 28% in case of differential taxation. The sales tax is included in the differential taxation.
