Eduard Josef Wimmer-Wisgrill* (Vienna 1882 - 1961 Vienna) Costume design Papageno, 1916 watercolor and pencil/paper 29 x 23 cm dated 16, monogrammed W design possibly for Wiener Werkstätte SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE € 500 - 800 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE € 500 Eduard Josef Wimmer-Wisgrill (1882–1961) was an Austrian interior architect, designer, fashion designer, and painter, and is considered one of the defining figures of the Wiener Werkstätte. As a private student of Koloman Moser and a pupil of Josef Hoffmann and Alfred Roller at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts, he early on developed an approach that integrated architecture, applied arts, textiles, and fashion. In 1907, he founded the fashion department of the Wiener Werkstätte and directed it until 1922; alongside this role, he designed fabrics, furniture, jewelry, glassware, leather goods, stage costumes, and interiors. His significant works include costumes and stage designs for the Cabaret Fledermaus as well as contributions to the furnishing of the Palais Stoclet. During the 1920s, Wimmer-Wisgrill worked and taught in New York and Chicago before returning to Vienna, where he headed the master class for fashion and the textile workshop at the School of Arts and Crafts until 1955. Wimmer-Wisgrill’s work lies at the heart of Viennese Modernism, bridging the geometric formal language of the Wiener Werkstätte with modern fashion, textile design, and stage art. His artistic circle included—in addition to Koloman Moser, Josef Hoffmann, and Alfred Roller—notably Dagobert Peche, Carl Otto Czeschka, and Otto Prutscher, as well as female designers active in the Wiener Werkstätte such as Maria Likarz, Mathilde Flögl, Vally Wieselthier, and Lilly Reich. As an educator, Wimmer-Wisgrill shaped a subsequent generation of fashion designers; his students included Gertrud Kornhas-Brandt, who later founded and directed the German Master School for Fashion in Munich. Thus, Wimmer-Wisgrill exemplifies the synthesis of the Wiener Werkstätte, reform fashion, Art Deco, textile art, and modern applied arts. PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights and platform fee. In the case of normal taxation (marked ° at the estimate), a premium of 24% is added to the highest bid. The mandatory sales tax is added to the sum of the highest bid, the buyer's premium and platform fee. This amounts to 13% for paintings, drawings, graphic works and sculptures and 20% for photographs and all other items. The buyer's premium amounts to 28% in case of differential taxation. The sales tax is included in the differential taxation.
