Max Snischek* (Dürnkrut 1891 - 1968 Hinterbrühl) Elegant lady, 1914 mixed media/paper 27,5 x 21,5 cm dated 1914, monogrammed M. S design possibly for Wiener Werkstätte SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE € 600 - 800 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE € 600 Max Snischek (1891–1968) was an Austrian artist and a significant designer for the Wiener Werkstätte, whose work encompassed fashion, textile design, graphic design, jewelry, and ornamental design. From 1912 to 1914, he studied at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts under Rosalia Rothansl and, starting in 1913, also attended Alfred Roller’s life drawing class. In 1922, Snischek took over the fashion department of the Wiener Werkstätte, where he collaborated closely with Maria Likarz; his textile and fashion designs are characterized by an elegant, stylized, and increasingly geometric-abstract formal language. He thus stands squarely within the context of Viennese Modernism, Art Nouveau, and Art Déco, as well as the Wiener Werkstätte—an institution shaped by figures such as Josef Hoffmann, Koloman Moser, Dagobert Peche, Carl Otto Czeschka, and Eduard Josef Wimmer-Wisgrill. Snischek’s work combines decorative abstraction with a clear, contemporary approach to figure and ornament. His textile designs from the 1920s, in particular, demonstrate the synthesis of geometry, surface, ornament, fashion, and applied art that was characteristic of the Wiener Werkstätte. His close association with Maria Likarz and Dagobert Peche is as significant as the overarching influence of Josef Hoffmann and Koloman Moser; in an international context, his stylized patterns and the elegant reductionism typical of Art Déco invite comparisons to the work of Sonia Delaunay and other contemporary European textile and fashion designers. PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights and platform fee. In the case of normal taxation (marked ° at the estimate), a premium of 24% is added to the highest bid. The mandatory sales tax is added to the sum of the highest bid, the buyer's premium and platform fee. This amounts to 13% for paintings, drawings, graphic works and sculptures and 20% for photographs and all other items. The buyer's premium amounts to 28% in case of differential taxation. The sales tax is included in the differential taxation.
