Dagobert Peche (Sankt Michael 1887 - 1923 Mödling) Green centrepiece with grapevines, 1919 mixed media/paper 28,1 x 21,5 cm dated 19, monogrammed DP SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE °€ 400 - 800 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE °€ 400 Dagobert Peche is considered one of the most imaginative artists of the Wiener Werkstätte (WW). He studied at the Technical University from 1906 to 1910 under Karl König, Karl Mayreder, Leopold Simony, and Max von Ferstel, and at the Academy of Fine Arts from 1908 to 1911 under Friedrich Ohmann. A trip to England and, in particular, the black-and-white graphic art of Aubrey Beardsley shaped his development. In 1911, Peche received a gold medal and other awards; in 1912, the Prix de Rome enabled him to spend two months in Paris. The publisher Alexander Koch supported him by featuring his work in the journal Kunst und Dekoration. Peche’s designs encompassed wallpaper, textiles, lace, furniture, metalware, ceramics, paper goods, and fashion. He gained renown through his wallpaper designs exhibited at the Imperial-Royal Austrian Museum for Art and Industry in 1913 and at the Cologne Werkbund Exhibition in 1914. In 1915, Josef Hoffmann recruited him to the Wiener Werkstätte; Peche subsequently managed its Zurich branch starting in 1916. After returning to Vienna in 1920, he designed, among other things, the WW stand for the 1921 Vienna International Fair. His decorative, whimsical, and deliberately non-utilitarian design language occupies a space between Viennese Modernism and Art Nouveau; its exaggerated style even anticipates later design trends and Pop Art. Within the circle of the WW, he shared close artistic and intellectual affinities with Koloman Moser, Josef Hoffmann, Mathilde Flögl, Vally Wieselthier, Michael Powolny, Carl Otto Czeschka, Otto Prutscher, Jutta Sika, and Maria Likarz. His work was honored in a memorial exhibition in 1923 and again in a 1998 exhibition at the MAK in Vienna. PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights and platform fee. In the case of normal taxation (marked ° at the estimate), a premium of 24% is added to the highest bid. The mandatory sales tax is added to the sum of the highest bid, the buyer's premium and platform fee. This amounts to 13% for paintings, drawings, graphic works and sculptures and 20% for photographs and all other items. The buyer's premium amounts to 28% in case of differential taxation. The sales tax is included in the differential taxation.
