Josef Gassler* (Austerlitz 1893 - 1978 Vienna) Motherly love, around 1926 bister/paper 53,5 x 40,5 cm signed J. Gassler SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE °€ 400 - 600 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE °€ 400 Josef Gassler was born in 1893 in Austerlitz, Moravia. He studied in Breslau and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under Rudolf Bacher, Hans Tichy, and Alois Delug; he gained early recognition there before his success was abruptly interrupted by the outbreak of the First World War. Deeply affected by the war, Gassler increasingly turned toward melancholic subjects and evolved his style—moving first toward Expressionism and later New Objectivity—while developing a visual language that was at once sober and psychologically intense. Between 1925 and 1927, he lived in Paris and traveled to Italy, the south of France, Prague, Vienna, and Karlsbad. From 1928 to 1939, he was a member of the Vienna Secession and associated with artist groups such as the Hagenbund; he subsequently joined the Künstlerhaus. From 1947, he lived in Karlsbad, creating designs for porcelain, glass, murals, and stage sets for Moser and Czech workshops; after the Second World War, Gassler moved permanently to Vienna. His preferred subjects were still lifes, portraits, and landscapes, reflecting his affinity for portraiture, atmospherically rich landscapes, and carefully composed still lifes. In addition, he created numerous frescoes in Bohemia and Moravia and designed stage sets for the theater in Karlsbad, meaning his body of work encompasses both classical easel painting and applied art forms. PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights and platform fee. In the case of normal taxation (marked ° at the estimate), a premium of 24% is added to the highest bid. The mandatory sales tax is added to the sum of the highest bid, the buyer's premium and platform fee. This amounts to 13% for paintings, drawings, graphic works and sculptures and 20% for photographs and all other items. The buyer's premium amounts to 28% in case of differential taxation. The sales tax is included in the differential taxation.
