He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna from 1900 to 1903 and at the Prague Academy of Fine Arts from 1903 to 1906, where in 1906 he joined the group OSMA (The Eight) – a pioneering association of the Czech avant-garde with Otakar Kubín, Emil Filla, Bohumil Kubišta, and Emil Artur Longen. In 1908/1909, he participated in the Vienna Art Show, having been influenced early on by Vincent van Gogh. In Vienna, he belonged to the circle of Egon Schiele, Oskar Kokoschka, and Albert Paris Gütersloh; from 1911 to 1915 in Berlin, he worked with Cubism and the journal Die Aktion; from 1915 to 1925 in Switzerland, he began his intensive engagement with musical themes. From the late 1920s in Berlin, and from 1931 in Vienna, his works were denounced as degenerate art in 1937; in 1938 he fled to Switzerland, and in 1939 to the USA. Oppenheimer created portraits, religious depictions, and scenes of everyday life, primarily expressionist works with Cubist and Futurist influences. He also worked with music: composers, conductors, musicians, and orchestras such as the string quartet founded in 1882 by Arnold Rosé and Eduard Rosé.
