Broncia Koller-Pinell (Sanok 1863 - 1934 Vienna) Sealus woodcut/paper 29 x 18,5 cm estate stamp Broncia Koller, see catalogue Broncia Koller, Vienna 2006, p. 144 as well as depicted in Baumgartner, catalogue raisonné Broncia Koller-Pinell, 1989, Gr/H 14 Robbus SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE °€ 250 - 500 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE °€ 250 Broncia Koller-Pinell—mother of the artist Silvia Koller—was born Bronislawa Pineles in the Galician Carpathian foothills and moved to Vienna with her family at the age of seven. She studied under Josef Raab and Alois Delug, exhibited for the first time at the International Art Exhibition in Vienna in 1888, and subsequently spent two years in Munich. Upon her return, she set up a studio on Piaristengasse and married the physician and physicist Hugo Koller. The country house in Oberwaltersdorf, acquired in 1904, was remodeled by Josef Hoffmann and became a meeting place for the Viennese Modernist circle. Her friends and guests included Hugo Wolf, Fritz Eckstein, Franz Schalk, Lou Andreas-Salomé, Gustav Mahler, Hermann Broch, and Egon Schiele, among others. Gustav Klimt, Carl Moll, Koloman Moser, and Josef Maria Olbrich were also part of the Secession and Art Nouveau milieu in which Koller-Pinell moved. In 1908, she became a member of the "Kunstschau" group. Her work combines elements of Impressionism, Art Nouveau, Expressionism, and the New Objectivity (Neue Sachlichkeit). She primarily created portraits, genre paintings, still lifes, and interiors that blend a sensitive observation of private life with an increasingly expressive language of color and form. Points of comparison include the painting styles of Rudolf von Alt and Leopold Blauensteiner, as well as the Modernism of Richard Gerstl, Oskar Kokoschka, and Albin Egger-Lienz. Exchanges with Egon Schiele and Albert Paris Gütersloh, along with travels across Europe starting in 1914, broadened her perspective on contemporary artistic trends. Female artists such as Helene Funke, Elfriede Miller-Haunfels, Bettina Ehrlich, Anna Lesznai, Louise Merkel-Romée, Frieda Salvendy, and Lilly Steiner provide an important context for comparing female artistic positions in Vienna and Central Europe. Although her work repeatedly met with harsh criticism during her lifetime, Koller-Pinell is today considered one of the most significant Austrian artists of Viennese Modernism.
