Carl Moll (Vienna 1861 - 1945 Vienna) St. Michael church, Vienna, 1903 color woodcut/paper 42,5 x 42,5 cm SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE °€ 800 - 1600 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE °€ 800 Carl Moll was an Austrian Art Nouveau painter. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna in 1880/1881 with Christian Groepenkerl and later became a student of Emil Jakob Schindler. In 1896, he received a small gold medal at the Internationale Kunstausslellung Berlin (International Art Exhibition Berlin). In 1897, he was one of the co-founders of the Vienna Secession. In 1901, Josef Hoffmann built a large semi-detached house for Moll and Koloman Moser on the Hohe Warte in Vienna, the first of a planned villa colony. At Moll's instigation, the state-run “Moderne Galerie” was founded in 1903, today the Österreichische Galerie Belvedere. In 1905, Moll left the Secession together with Gustav Klimt's group. As director of the Miethke Gallery from 1904 to 1912, he acted as a supporter of Klimt. He organised exhibitions of international artists and brought, among others, works by Vincent van Gogh to Vienna for the first time. Moll was a member of the Deutsche Künstlervereinigung (German Artists' Association). His stepdaughter Alma (Mahler-Werfel) had to flee with her husband Franz Werfel in 1938 after the "Anschluss" when Austria was annexed by Hitler's Germany. After Vienna was captured by the Red Army in 1945, Moll committed suicide along with his daughter and son-in-law. Moll became known for his large-format color lithographs and woodcuts. The style of his later landscape paintings increasingly changed from the two-dimensional painting of the Secessionists to more spatiality; in later years he moved more and more towards Expressionism. Works by Moll are included in the following collections: Jenö Eisenberger Collection, Vienna; Leopold Museum, Vienna; Muzeul Tari Crisurilor, Oradea; Lower Austria Museum, St. Pölten; Austrian Gallery Belvedere, Vienna. PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights and platform fee. In the case of normal taxation (marked ° at the estimate), a premium of 24% is added to the highest bid. The mandatory sales tax is added to the sum of the highest bid, the buyer's premium and platform fee. This amounts to 13% for paintings, drawings, graphic works and sculptures and 20% for photographs and all other items. The buyer's premium amounts to 28% in case of differential taxation. The sales tax is included in the differential taxation.
